'Symbolic' moment cyclist falls off bike as reporter discusses Brexit on live TV

The bizarre moment a cyclist fell off his bike during a live TV report on Brexit has been declared 'symbolic'.

BBC journalist Sarah Smith was broadcasting live at Holyrood in Edinburgh when a cyclist can be seen moving into shot.

Moments later, the man unexpectedly topples off his bike and falls to the ground.

Ms Smith appeared unaware of the incident as she said on screen: "Scottish voters should have the right to choose whether or not they want to have an independent future."

The short clip has been widely shared since it was recorded yesterday.

The journalist tweeted the excerpt: "Perils of live broadcasting on a momentous night - watch for the cyclist coming in from the left."

Welsh rugby referee Nigel Owens tweeted: "Did anyone else see the guy on the bike fall off. Sorry but I had to laugh."

One commenter replied: "A bit staged but I laughed when I saw it. Sarah Smith did well not to laugh although she nearly did."

Another said: "Omg this has made my evening complete! Gutted I missed it! I bet he thought 'yes, this is my chance, I'm gonna be on TV, act cool..."

One joked the cyclist was drink-cycling and said it should never be attempted, but 'only by professionals'.

One said the moment was a 'fantastic Brexit symbolism'.
