A Sydney man who stopped at the airport on the way to engage in extremist violence is set to be sentenced on Monday.
Nowroz Rayed Amin, 30, was on his way to Bangladesh, where he admits he planned to engage in extremist violence, when stopped at Sydney Airport in 2016.
He faces life in prison after pleading guilty to one count of planning or preparing for a terrorist act between May 2015 and February 2016.
Prosecutors say he intended to carry out an attack locally, pointing to messages with Islamic extremists in Bangladesh in which they claim Amin used code words to talk about making explosives in Australia.
Amin's lawyer told a sentencing hearing in September his client became a "lost soul" in his teenage years as he experienced discrimination and violence after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
He later began to read extremist literature and harboured a wish to go to Syria to fight with the Islamic State.
He was angered by the treatment of conservative Muslims in Bangladesh, where his parents came from. He discussed the issue on social media platforms with his cousin and others in Bangladesh.
Amin is one of three men to be sentenced by the NSW Supreme Court for terrorism-related crimes on Monday.
Isaac El Matari is to be sentenced for being an IS member, with his sentencing judge told the 22-year-old was a radicalised ISIS member with plans to target Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral and the American embassy for terror attacks.
He had also spoken of travelling to Afghanistan to fight on the frontline with the aim of supporting ISIS.
Meanwhile, Youssef Uweinat, 23, pleaded guilty to being a member of IS knowing it was a terrorist organisation, between June and December 2019.
He later renounced such membership in court and said he had been naive and "brainwashed by IS propaganda".
