The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will tackle Das Rheingold, the first part of Wagner's Ring Cycle, as the centrepiece of its 2023 season.
It is the first time in more than 20 years the orchestra has performed the piece, which will be staged as an opera-in-concert led by chief conductor Simone Young.
The orchestra is taking on the 15-hour epic Ring Cycle as a multi-year production project, with Das Rheingold as the first instalment.
Next year looks to be a big one for Wagner, with the full Ring Cycle to be performed at a festival in country Victoria over autumn, and Opera Australia staging the epic in Brisbane in December.
But it will be hard to compete with the new world-class acoustics at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will release the program for its first full season at the renovated venue on Wednesday.
It also includes a global competition, Play with Ray, for amateur violinists to perform with internationally renowned artist Ray Chen.
There is also a one-night collaboration with Spinifex Gum, a choir of Indigenous girls from far north Queensland.
