Trial of Sydney swim coach halted and jury dismissed after judge says 'something occurred overnight'

Kyle Daniels is accused of inappropriately touching young female swim students.

The jury in the trial of former Sydney swim coach Kyle Daniels has been discharged only a day after the case began.

The 22-year-old pleaded not guilty to 26 charges after nine young girls accused him of abusing them at the Mosman Swim Centre in 2018 and 2019.

The charges include multiple counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10.

The case began in the NSW District Court on Monday with opening addresses from Crown Prosecutor Karl Prince and defence barrister Leslie Nicholls.

But shortly after 10:00am today, the jury panel was brought back into the courtroom and Judge Kara Shead said jurors would be discharged.

"Something has occurred overnight that was unexpected and as a result of that I am discharging you as the jury," the judge said.

"I don't want you to speculate or worry. There's nothing for you to be individually concerned about or worry about."

The reasons for the discharge and discussion around it cannot be published for legal reasons.

"In fairness to everyone we do need to begin again," Judge Shead said.

"I'm very sorry to have to discharge you as a jury."

Mr Daniels, who attended court with his parents, sat quietly behind his barrister as the jurors were discharged.

The case is due to begin with a new jury on Wednesday.
