Sydney Sweeney Transitions From Sony To DC Universe As Supergirl

Sony Japan Mobility Show 2023, in Tokyo

Sydney Sweeney has transitioned from Sony's Spider-Man Universe to the DC Universe, taking on the role of one of DC's alternative Supergirls in a new fan art creation. The DC Universe, under the direction of James Gunn, is making significant strides towards realization, with the upcoming premiere of Creature Commandos on Max this year and the current production of a new Superman movie. Various other DC Studios projects are also in different stages of development, with some slated to enter production later in 2024.

Milly Alcock has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, becoming the latest cinematic portrayal of Kara Zor-El on the big screen, following Sasha Calle's iteration in the DCEU. However, some fans are advocating for the introduction of another version of Supergirl. In response to this, new fan art by Davi Alves depicts Sweeney as Power Girl, the Earth-2 counterpart of Kara in the comics.

While the multiverse may not be an immediate feature of upcoming DC Universe projects, it presents an intriguing narrative possibility, particularly for Supergirl. With all actresses who have portrayed Supergirl in live-action still active, there is a unique opportunity for them to potentially unite in some capacity. This could pave the way for a convergence of multiple Girls of Steel, especially once Alcock's Supergirl character is more established in the DC Universe.

The DC Universe could rectify a missed opportunity from The Flash movie, where multiple Batmen were featured but never shared the screen. Drawing inspiration from the successful use of the multiverse in the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which saw different Superman actors interact, this concept could be further explored in the DCU. Bringing together all live-action Supergirls in a multiverse storyline could compensate for the underutilization of Kara in The Flash movie.

Exploring the dynamics of multiple Kara doppelgangers in a live-action setting would be a fresh and captivating narrative angle. While such a storyline may not materialize for a few years, the potential for its realization remains. The future will reveal whether the DC Universe will witness more than one iteration of Supergirl across both the big and small screens.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is among the slate of DC movies being released by Warner Bros. under the guidance of DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. The official confirmation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in January 2023, alongside other DC titles like Superman: Legacy, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing, underscores the expansive and diverse cinematic universe being cultivated by DC.
