Transforming into well known figures in sports is surely one way to see your star rise. As a fan of the film I, Tonya, movies like the upcoming boxing film Christy remind me why these stories are so important.
Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) is a professional boxer who famously survived a murder attempt from her ex-husband, Jim (Ben Foster). Now, in 2025, Martin is happily married to Lisa Holewyne, played by Katy O’Brian in the film, and Martin’s story is one of strength, resilience, and a story of course given all that she is forced to go through.
The trailer for the film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), dropped and shows Sweeney as a completely transformed Martin. As I said, I love I, Tonya so the wig work in Christy is going to work on me.
The synopsis for Christy is as follows: “Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster).”
It goes on to show a darker side to Martin’s life, saying “But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”
Sweeney’s transformation into Martin has already been the subject of online chatter but watching the trailer, it is going to be fascinating to see how O’Brian and Sweeney both transformed themselves to play these two boxing legends.
Christy is set to hit theaters on November 7.
