Sydney Sweeney is building a serious case for micro skirts—here's how to rep the celeb-approved look this season

Here's why you might want to consider adding a micro skirt to your summer capsule wardrobe, according to Sydney Sweeney...and well, pretty much every other celeb we turn to for style inspo too.

Despite the denim midi skirt threatening to make a comeback, it's the classic '60s mini skirt (made famous by the late Mary Quant) that we're seeing everywhere this season—from Lily-Rose Depp's bikini black micro skirt look in The Idol to Hailey Bieber's matching coat and mini skirt moment in May 2023.

And it's unsurprising that they're having such a surge in popularity, what with leg-baring trends like the 'no pants' look also gaining traction. So, if you're wanting to stay cool, while looking uber-stylish this summer, here's how to rock a micro skirt—inspo guide, incoming!

What are micro skirts?

If you're wondering about the origins of the itty bitty mini skirt, we have British fashion designer Mary Quant to thank for them. She is credited for creating the mini skirt way back in the 1960s and much like many of our fave 90s fashion trends, they never go out of style.

As the name infers, a micro skirt/mini skirt is one that falls well above the knee. In 2023, the micro skirts are shorter still, covering really only the bum area—hence why they're also a big hit with celebs who are also loving the 'trouserless' vibe right now.

A micro skirt is perfect for summer when paired with a crop or tank top and for any season really when combined with some tights and boots. A black mini skirt especially, is a true staple that everyone needs in their rotation, for day, night and even office styling.

Here we see Sydney rocking both a green pleated skirt, with a matching blazer and a very 2000s fashion-esque pink denim micro skirt. She paired the latter with a white baby tee and round, tinted sunglasses.

Kylie is giving major 'Quiet Luxury' vibes with this all-white fit. She's wearing a pleated mini-skirt, which seems to be a popular style this season.

3. Ice Spice

Ice Spice served 90s double denim at the Governor's Ball Music Festival 2023, with this pleated denim mini skirt and matching top.

So, if you've already got a denim micro skirt sitting in your wardrobe, why not take some cues from Ice Spice and pair it with a denim top!

4. Hailey Bieber

Here, Hailey gives us two examples of how to wear micro skirts—either as part of a co-ord or with a bomber-style jacket and sneakers.

Both of these looks are great for fall and spring when you want layers.

5. Lori Harvey

Putting a twist on the sheer trend, Lori Harvey rocked a mini skirt with a sheer layer overtop, making it more of a midi skirt.

This look is perfect for a date night or for more of a sophisticated look.
