Sydney Swans player Elijah Taylor charged with aggravated assault of woman in hotel

Sydney Swans rookie Elijah Taylor has been charged with aggravated assault.

The 19-year-old, who is from Western Australia, was arrested at a home in the southern Perth suburb of Langford yesterday, and questioned at Cannington Police Station for several hours.

Police said Taylor assaulted an 18-year-old woman "who is known to him" at a hotel in Perth's CBD over a two-hour period from 6.00am to 8.00am yesterday.

He is due to attend a family violence hearing in the Perth Magistrates Court on September 30.

The AFL said it would not be commenting at this stage.

A week ago, the AFL confirmed it had been in contact with "local law enforcement" over "extremely serious" allegations made on social media about Sydney Swans player Elijah Taylor.

The allegations had been made the previous night by Taylor's ex-girlfriend, who was part of the rookie's COVID-19 protocol breach.

An Instagram post containing the allegations was removed.

Taylor suspended for quarantine breach

Last month Taylor was suspended from the team for the rest of the season for breaching COVID-19 quarantine protocols after his then-partner entered the Swans' quarantine accommodation in the Swan Valley when not authorised to do so.

It constituted not only a breach of the AFL return to play protocols but also the Western Australian COVID-19 quarantine directions that apply to Swans players and officials at their quarantine accommodation.

The Swans were sanctioned $50,000 for the breach, although $25,000 of that was suspended.

Taylor remained in Perth after the protocol breach to be with family, while the Swans moved to a new hub in Cairns to finish the season.

Taylor made his debut for Sydney in round seven after he was recruited from Perth in the WAFL with pick 36 in last year's AFL draft.
