Sydney survive early ALM scare to sink Mariners

Sydney FC have sealed a come-from-behind win over Central Coast to hold on to top spot on the A-League Men table with a 2-1 victory.

After an hour-long delay to kick-off at Polytec Stadium due to lightning storms, Sydney recovered from a sluggish start and rekindled their attacking spark.

After Bradley Tapp had given the Mariners an early lead on Saturday night, Al Haasan Toure struck back for the Sky Blues before Spanish striker Victor Campuzano popped up with the winner in the second half.

Sydney remain first and one point ahead of Auckland FC ahead of an away trip to face Perth Glory next week.

Things could have been a lot different for the visitors given the slowness with which Ufuk Talay's men started in Gosford, as the Mariners capitalised when the Sky Blues fell asleep at an early corner.

Christian Theoharous' delivery was allowed to glide through to an unmarked Tapp who thrashed home after just nine minutes.

Campuzano had a golden chance to get Sydney back level soon after Tapp's opener but he could only lash his shot at Andrew Redmayne.

The former Sydney No.1 was powerless to prevent his former club from eventually taking the lead when Peruvian playmaker Piero Quispe set up Toure.

Toure, who won his first Socceroos call-up last month, steered the ball past Redmayne from close range to register his fourth goal of the season.

Theoharous, Alfie McCalmont and Miguel Di Pizio all hit the woodwork in a lively first half which culminated with Campuzano having a goal chalked off for offside.

But the Spanish striker could not be denied midway through the second half to nudge his side ahead.

Tiago Quintal whipped in a cross as Campuzano made a late charge into the six-yard box where he was able to head the ball downward and beyond Redmayne's reach.

Lucas Mauragis went closest to pulling the Mariners back level but he could only flash his shot past Harrison Devenish-Meares far post.
