Sydney Olympic Park vaccination hub to open soon but GPs still first port of call for over 50s

NSW Premier announces Homebush vaccination hub will open on May 10.

The NSW mass vaccination hub will open on May 10 as the government escalates efforts to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to six million people.

The hub, located in Sydney Olympic Park, is expected to distribute half of the state's vaccines, with the remainder being administered at 100 other sites.

Doors will open to vaccinate people who are eligible under Phase 1 of the rollout — frontline healthcare and quarantine workers and their families.

People over the age of 50 will have to wait until May 24, three weeks behind the May 3 target set by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

"This is because NSW during the pandemic has always made sure we have our systems in place, to give people a positive experience," Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Wednesday.

"There are 2.9 million people in NSW over 50. Can you imagine if everybody went online to book their vaccination on the same day, the systems would not cope."

Instead, the Premier encouraged people over 50 to get their jab at GP clinics where vaccines can be administered from May 17.

"In the first instance, the GP network is where you should go to get your vaccine if you're over the age of 50," Ms Berejiklian said.

"The GP network has been the main way people have received their vaccinations."

The Olympic Park vaccination hub is expected to administer 30,000 doses each week and it will be the only site in the state offering both Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines.

People will be able to schedule bookings at the hub but the Premier warned the wait times could stretch out over multiple weeks.

"We have a sense of urgency about vaccinating the adult population as soon as we can," she said.

"If we're serious about keeping people out of hospital, and resuming normal life as soon as we can with COVID, then we must vaccinate our adult population."

NSW Health administered 3,485 vaccines in the past 24 hours, pushing the state's total to 591,535.
