Here's what you need to know this morning.

NSW on alert after infectious visitor

Several more venues have been added to the list of places in regional NSW that a woman went to in the past week while potentially infectious with COVID-19.

The 44-year-old woman travelled from Melbourne to Queensland through a swathe of regional towns in NSW including Gillenbah, Forbes, Dubbo and Moree.

An updated health alert was issued last night with two new venues the woman went to on June 2 and June 3.

They include the Shell service station in Dubbo, and Woolworths supermarket in Moree.

NSW Health said it was continuing to trace the woman's movements as she travelled through those regional centres.

Residents in the affected communities are being urged to be on the lookout for any cold-like symptoms and to get tested and isolate as soon as they appear.

Emergency strike

Paramedics will only attend life-threatening calls today due to a pay dispute with the NSW Government.

The 24-hour strike on non-life-threatening calls was made after Health Services Union delegates met with Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, but were unable to negotiate a pay resolution.

About 1,000 paramedics are participating in the industrial action after their attempt to secure a 4.7 per cent pay rise was not welcomed.

Roberts-Smith to give evidence

Former special forces soldier Ben Roberts-Smith is due to appear in the witness box today after an unexpected delay in his defamation trial yesterday.

The Victorian Cross recipient was expected to give evidence yesterday but the hearing was adjourned until today.

That came after a judge presiding over a separate matter involving the war veteran questioned the nature of his relationship with one of his female solicitors.

Lawyers for Mr Roberts-Smith have rejected any suggestion the pair have a romantic relationship.

The 42-year-old will give evidence and be cross-examined by Nine's lawyers as he seeks aggravated damages against the Sydney Morning Herald, the Age and Canberra Times over allegations of war crimes, domestic violence and bullying.

Black ice warning for weekend drivers

The cold snap in the state has also concerned police as black ice on roads overwhelm drivers.

Superintendent for the traffic and highway patrol Stephen Hegarty said the drop in weather had been a shock to some city drivers heading to regional spots.

"There were a lot of cars yesterday that left the highway," Superintendent Hegarty said.

"We always say drive to the conditions … but we have a plan and we will be targeting anyone that is breaking the law and anyone that puts anyone at risk."

Extra police will be on the roads this Queen's Birthday long weekend with double demerit points enforced for speeding, using a mobile phone, not wearing a seatbelt or a motorcycle helmet while on NSW roads.

Bondi school fire

Bondi Beach Public School in Sydney's east will be closed for the rest of the week after a big blaze badly damaged the top floor of the building.

Dozens of children were evacuated from the school's playground when the fire broke out at around 5:00pm on Wednesday.

The Education Department says at the time of the fire there were also around 130 students and three staff at the school's after-hours children's care service, but everyone was accounted for.

Fire superintendent Brendan Hurley said investigations were underway into what caused the fire, which took around an hour to bring under control.

"There is significant damage to the building on the top floor," he said.

"Civil engineers and structural engineers will be on scene … and complete their damage assessments."

Stockton shooting death

A woman in Newcastle was shot and killed last night when she answered a knock at her front door, NSW police say.

Police were called to a home on Queens Street in Stockton just after 8:00pm last night following reports of a shooting.

The woman died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be 61-years-old.

A crime scene has been established and forensic police are on the scene.

Detectives have formed Strike Force Backhouse to investigate and are asking for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the surrounding area to contact them.

Power outage at Jindabyne

As if the cold snap wasn't chilly enough to deal with, thousands of residents and visitors to Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains region were last night left without power.

Essential Energy has confirmed that around 3,500 people lost power for around an hour as a result of an "unplanned power outage".

A second outage a short time later saw several hundred people in the same area affected.

The energy supplier said in both instances safety equipment turned off the power supply after detecting a fault on the network.

A spokesperson said crews restored power after confirming it was safe to do so.

An investigation is now underway into what caused the fault.
