Sydney news: Back to online schooling for students in Greater Sydney

Here's what you need to know this morning.

School resumes online for those in Greater Sydney

School resumes today for term 3 in NSW, but for students in Greater Sydney it is a return to home learning which could possibly stretch beyond this week.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said a decision on whether to extend home learning would be made in the next day or two and appealed to parents to follow the guidelines.

"Please keep your children at home if you can, particularly in those hotspot areas of south-western Sydney," she said.

She said there was "every intention" that students would be back in the classroom for week 2, but the surge of cases could disrupt those plans.

"There are still very real concerns from [NSW] Health, about the transmission that we're seeing, particularly of the Delta strain. So we'll be making some decisions within the next day or two."

Homeowners sue property giant over alleged defects

The owners of an apartment tower in Chatswood are suing Australian property giant Mirvac over alleged defects to the exterior of the building.

The mixed-use tower at 7 Railway Street was completed in 2014 and contains almost 300 lots.

In documents filed to the Supreme Court of NSW, owners allege there are six separate issues with the exterior louvres, including that they are too large for the "wind load" and do not comply with building standards.

Owners are taking action against Mirvac Constructions as the builders, and Mirvac Projects as the developer.

A Mirvac spokeswoman said the company denied the allegations but the matter could proceed to mediation as part of the "ordinary course as with any proceeding".

The case is set down for a directions hearing on Friday, July 16.

Prison authorities are investigating a riot that broke out yesterday at Parklea prison in north-west Sydney, during which inmates lit fires and climbed onto the roof of the building.

More than a dozen prisoners spent several hours on the roof,  taunting prison officers and police as flames and thick smoke billowed from the building.

Another 50 inmates in the prison yard refused to follow the directions of staff.

Heavily armed police moved in at dusk to quell the riot and take back control of the prison.
