Babe, wake up: Time Out’s annual list of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods has dropped, and two Aussie suburbs got a shout!
The list arrived earlier this week, and was assembled by Time Out’s “global network of experts”.
Spanning 39 hotspots all over the world, it’s based on the quality of nightlife and the vibrance of culture and diversity, as well as the affordability of food and drink and the general, shall we say, je ne sais quoi, of a given neighbourhood.
So which Aussie ‘burbs did us proud? For the first time ever, the Sydney suburb of Burwood cracked the top 39, coming in at the respectable 16th position!

Boosting the inner-west neighbourhood’s rank was its diversity as the fifth-most multicultural suburb in Australia, which in turn gives it some truly delectable cuisines spanning Chinese, Japanese, Greek and Italian grub.
Burwood was also commended for its vibrant nightlife (for those who can still remember it the morning after), as well as its leafy parks and its hosting of Lunar New Year celebrations every February.
At the risk of igniting some interstate rivalries, Burwood came in ahead of North Melbourne, which landed in 24th place on the list — probably to the dismay of Fitzroy Garage party-goers.
North Melbourne — located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD — also got kudos for its multiculturalism, as well as its village-style vibe, Victorian-era shopfronts and the bar-lined strip of Errol Street.
Both those ‘burbs put Australia on the map by beating out neighbourhoods in places like Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong, but we were (criminally) outdone by renowned hotspots like Camberwell in London (4th place) and Jimbōchō in Tokyo, which topped the list.
Reacting to the news, Burwood’s mayor, John Faker said it “came as no surprise to us”.
“Burwood is Sydney’s cultural playground, a place to eat, play, live, and celebrate the rich cultural offerings of our diverse and vibrant community … We are incredibly proud,” he said per The Guardian.

It’s not the first time an Aussie suburb has nabbed a spot, with Sydney’s Chippendale, Melbourne’s Windsor and Norwood in Adelaide each cracking the top 39 last year.
If only there were a list for the neighbourhoods with the highest concentration of lycra and acai, then Sydney might get number one with the entirety of the eastern suburbs.
