Sydney man shot dead in targeted attack had links to organised crime

A large area in central Fairfield is cordoned off after last night's shooting.

A 34-year-old man who died in a targeted attack at Fairfield, in Sydney's south-west, has been identified as having links to an organised crime gang.

Emergency crews were called to a laneway in William Street at 3:00am, where they found the man with several gunshot wounds.

Amar Kettule could not be revived and died at the scene.

Detective Acting Superintendent, Glen Fitzgerald, said police were trying to determine a motive.

"We believe the attack to be targeted," he said.

"This is a violent attack on a suburban street and is totally unacceptable behaviour.

"Currently Fairfield detectives and homicide squad are investigating. At the moment — the investigation — it's early stages."

Fairfield Police and the homicide squad were doorknocking in the area.

Detective Fitzgerald has appealed to the public to help with any information, and has warned the shooting could be a revenge attack.

"We will have a number of police out on the highway ... doing whatever we can to eliminate any chances of any type of action happening," he said.

"But until we know the cause of this, it's difficult to say what ... will happen."

A number of family members arrived on the scene at Fairfield shortly after the shooting and are assisting with investigations, police said.
