A Sydney man has been arrested over alleged support for the Islamic State group in online posts.

The Australian Federal Police and NSW Police said a 24-year-old man was held on Friday after search warrants were executed in Chester Hill and Sefton.

Police will allege the man's rhetoric online was escalating, that he had collected a large amount of extremist material and that he was in possession of several improvised explosive recipes.

Police will address the media later on Saturday morning regarding the arrest.
