A 38-year-old Sydney man is facing six months in an Indonesian prison after he allegedly slapped a woman at Bali‘s Apurva Kempinski resort in January.
Ali Shahrouk could potentially be put behind bars in Indonesia after he allegedly got into a physical altercation with German tourist Christin Steinrode Tiller and another tourist, Samer Beckdache, after her child was pushed down a waterslide at the Apruva Kempinski Resort in Nusa Dua.
According to court documents obtained by The Australian, the alleged incident began when Beckdache’s older child was accused of pushing Tiller’s three-year-old down a waterslide. Tiller then allegedly confronted Beckdache after she was told about the incident by another visitor.

During the confrontation, things got physical with Tiller allegedly pushing Beckdache into the pool, who pulled her in by grabbing her hair.
After that incident, prosecutors alleged that Shahrouk confronted Tiller, which sparked another argument that led to a physical altercation between the two tourists. The publication reports that the Sydney dad allegedly slapped and punched the woman, which caused “bruising and fractures to her nose and jaw”.
Prosecutors say Tiller was taken to BIMC hospital in Nusa Dua after the incident, while her husband contacted South Kuta police.
Sharhrouk was arrested and charged with assault and has been in custody since the alleged incident.
Speaking to the publication, Sabam Antonius, Shahrouk’s Bali lawyer, claims he was in the pool with his child when the argument between Tiller and Beckdache occurred, and that he had approached her out of fears for his and his child’s safety.
“She almost hit the child of the defendant, our client, when they fell in the pool and because of that he told them off, like ‘Hey, you almost hit my child’,” the lawyer told The Australian.
“Instead of her responding calmly, our client was insulted and spat on. He backed away and the woman started yelling. Then she scratched our client and as a reflex he slapped her.
“He realised his mistake. There was a commotion, security came. Apparently she reported it to police. He acknowledged his wrongdoing and apologised… but the legal process continued.”
Sharhrouk’s lawyer adds that the Sydneysider admitted to slapping Tiller, but denied punching her. He also said that he tried to apologise to Tiller. However, she went home with her family reporting the incident to the police.
“If they really wanted to see our client punished, they should have come to court to present their side,” he continued.
Shahrouk will be sentenced on May 20.
