Murder charge laid after 'very confronting' alleged attack using car and axe

Police were called to the scene after reports of a crash and two men fighting.

A 75-year-old man has been charged with murder, after allegedly hitting his ex wife's partner with a car and repeatedly striking him with an axe in western Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Cabramatta West in Sydney's south-west just before 9:00 last night after receiving reports of a crash and two men fighting each other.

They found a man, believed to be a 59-year-old, with a head wound. He died at the scene.

Police arrested a 75-year-old man, who they say was known to the victim, and seized an axe.

Police will allege he ran over the victim and attacked him with the axe.

Acting Inspector Mitchell Corfield said the suspect in the axe attack was the ex-husband of the victim's partner.

"The parties are known to police," he said.

Acting Inspector Corfield said police would thank a neighbour on the street for calling the police.

"It's a public street, very confronting for them, but we'll thank them for contacting police and their assistance," he said.

"Police located the male on the roadway with some injuries to his head, quite confronting for police at the scene … obviously quite a violent incident."

He said the victim's family were distressed and being comforted by other family members.

Detectives from Fairfield City Police Area Command have established Strike Force Pierson to investigate the incident.
