Sydney man arrested by counterterrorism police over trips to Syria

A man suspected of fighting with a terrorist organisation in Syria has been arrested in Sydney's south-west.

The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism team said it had been investigating the circumstances surrounding the 44-year-old man's travels to Syria since 2019.

Police allege the man, who is an Australian and Jordanian citizen, travelled from Sydney to Syria in 2012 and 2013 to help terror group Jabhat al-Nusra.

"Suffice to say Jabhat al-Nusra is a prescribed terrorist organisation and if you do some research you'll find Jabhat al-Nusra was the precursor to ISIS," said Acting Commander Mark McIntyre from the AFP Counter Terrorism Operations North.

The man was arrested in Mount Lewis on Friday morning and taken to Bankstown Police Station and was expected to be charged with two terror offences.

Police were able to make the arrest after new evidence was uncovered by the NSW State Crime Command during separate investigations.

A search is underway at the man's Punchbowl home where police are looking for physical and electronic evidence.

The investigation, named Operation Mikhof, is being conducted by officers from the Australian Federal Police, NSW Police Force, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and the NSW Crime Commission.

Officers said the investigation found no threat to the Australian public.
