A young man charged with murder following a hallway wrestle inside serviced apartments in Sydney's CBD has had his case heard for the first time in court.

Connor Godfrey, 20, is charged with murdering Giuseppe Pagano after the 43-year-old died at the Haymarket apartment building in the early hours of Easter Sunday.

Godfrey did not appear before Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday where an application for forensic procedures to gather DNA evidence, including palmprints and fingerprints was granted by magistrate Robert Williams.

Godfrey did not apply for bail but is expected to at his next mention.

Residents told police they had heard a "melee" or a "wrestle" taking place in the hallway outside their doors on the 13th floor of the Castlereagh Street apartment tower at about 3am on Sunday.

"It's made enough noise to rouse the neighbours, who have contacted police," Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Dunstan said.

The men were in one of the apartments on the 13th floor before their altercation spilled into the hallway.

The incident started with punches then escalated into a wrestle but no weapons were used, Supt Dunstan said.

Neighbours and emergency services tried to resuscitate the older man in the hallway, to no avail.

Godfrey is due to appear via video link at his next court appearance on April 15.
