Sydenham fire: Forty firefighters tackle blaze at house in south east London

Forty firefighters were called to a house fire in south east London on Thursday afternoon.

Six fire engines were called to the blaze in Beaulieu Avenue in Sydenham.

Photos from nearby houses showed smoke billowing from a property.

The first and second floor of the three-story house has been destroyed by the blaze, the London Fire Brigade said, and half of the ground floor and half of the roof has also been damaged.

Crews from Forest Hill, Beckenham, West Norwood, Lewisham, Peckham and New Cross fire stations were called at 1.15pm and the blaze was under control by 3pm.

The brigade's control centre received 21 calls alerting them to the fire.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
