SWX fire: People warned to avoid area as street 'completely fills' with smoke

People have been warned to avoid an area of Bristol city centre amid a huge fire at famous music venue SWX.

Firefighters from eight stations are dealing with the blaze at the four-storey building on Nelson Street this morning (July 13).

Fire engines from Temple, Bedminster, Southmead, Patchway, Avonmouth, Hicks Gate, Pill and Nailsea are on the scene after "multiple witnesses" reported the fire at 4.35am.

Avon and Somerset police officers are also in attendance, helping with road closures. Nelson Street and Union Street are sealed off.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said at 6.14am: "As the incident remains ongoing we are urging all public and local transport to avoid the area. Many thanks for your cooperation at this time."

SWX is one of Bristol's best-known nightclubs, formerly known as Papillons, The Works, Top Rank, Baileys, Romeo and Juliets, Odyssey and Syndicate.

A bus driver who was in the area at around 5am said: "Nelson Street and Union Street are both closed and buses diverted.

"The smoke had completely filled the area but it seemed it was coming from more the front of the building where the reception is and the clubs offices are, rather than the back end where the main part of the club is.

"But I couldn’t see around the back as police had completely cordoned off the area so it could’ve been just as bad. But if it was mainly the front, the main club area might have survived just smoke damage. It's too early to speculate I guess."

SWX tweeted at 5.15pm yesterday: "It's official, we are opening back to normal, one week today."
