SWX arson: Man admits setting fire to Bristol nightclub

A man has admitted setting fire to the SWX nightclub in Bristol.

Owen Marshall, 28, of Royate Hill, Eastville, Bristol, pleaded guilty to the offence of arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered before judges yesterday (September 6)

SWX, on Nelson Street, sustained significant damage after it was set alight in the early hours of July 13.

Marshall also admitted at Bristol Crown Court making threats to damage Lakota nightclub in a letter sent on August 2 and causing criminal damage to the Barley Mow pub, on Barton Road, Bristol on August 28.

Avon and Somerset Police said in a short statement: "He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at the same court on November 18."

The gig venue and club sustained significant damage after it was set alight, just a week before it was due to reopen, and remains closed today.

The fire at SWX closed down Nelson Street for most of July 13, and firefighters battled for hours to put out the blaze.
