Swords assault sees man left fearing for life after alleged xenophobic attack during late night jog

A man was left fearing for his life after an alleged xenophobic attack while out jogging late last night in north Dublin.

The supposedly random assault happened on the Glen Ellan Road in Swords just after 11pm last night, when a man was targeted by another man who was unknown to him and began to hurl xenophobic abuse at him.

The victim, who is in 40s, is understood to have recently undergone open heart surgery and was left with several injuries after being kicked from behind and then strangled, punched and kicked in the vicious attack.

If not for a hero Dublin Bus driver, known only as "Ken", the attack may have gone further but the horn from the bus he was driving led to the attacker leaving the scene.

A garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "Gardaí are investigating an assault that is reported to have occurred in the Glen Ellen Road area of Swords, Co. Dublin, on 10/03/2021 at approbatively 11.15pm.

"A man, aged in his 40s, reports he was assaulted by another unknown male. He attended Beaumont Hospital as a precaution with non-life threatening injuries.

"Investigations are ongoing."
