Thank you so much for joining me for this one. The host nation keep their Euros dream going with a 2-0 win over Iceland, making them the first team to be knocked out of the tournament. To recap all of the action, take a read of the report below. We will be back tomorrow with all the build-up to the Group B games so we will see you then.
The Euro 2025 is in full flow and the action just keeps coming. There are two cracking games tomorrow with favourites Spain taking on Belgium and Portugal playing Italy.
Switzerland captain Lia Walti told ITV: “Step by step, we got carried by our fans. It was an incredible atmosphere. In the end we created the chances to win that game, I am so happy. We have a really young team and in some actions we are a little bit rushed, we waste a lot of chances… We got a couple of good chances and we finally scored.”

Switzerland have never progressed out of the group stage at the Euros and they are within touching distance now. They play Finland, who can also progress, on Thursday.
Norway have also been confirmed as group winners as the difference maker being head-to-head at Euro 2025. As they have already beaten Finland and Switerland, they will remain top no matter what happens. That is crucial because they are now likely to avoid favourites Spain in the quarter-finals.

Iceland out, Norway progress
The result means Iceland are out and that Norway will progress to the knock out stages. That’s because Finland and Switzerland play one another in the final stage of the group stage, whoever wins that game will progress.

Full time: Switzerland 2-0 Iceland
Switzerland are beaming, their campaign is well and truly on track. Goals from Reuteler and Pilgrim ensure three points and a vital chance to get out of this group. It’s heartbreak for Iceland, who are the first nation knocked out of this tournament.
90 + 1 min: There are three minutes added.
Pilgrim, who has had a fair few attempts, takes a long range effort and it beats the keeper. She dances in celebration. That’s surely the game, Iceland hearts will be broken.
GOAL! Switzerland 2-0 Iceland (Pilgrim, 90)
What a strike.
Updated
89 min: The corner is easily dealt with but the supporters don’t care, the party has already started as the home nation look to secure their first win of the tournament.
88 min: Switzerland almost in again but it is another great save by the keeper, a corner to come. Apologies for the brevity, needed to plug my laptop charger in!
87 min: Iceland are really trying to put things together but they just can’t click, it seems their Euros campaign is coming to a close.
85 min: No penalty needed to be given, that was a great intervention from Gudrun Arnardottir.
84 min: Switzerland are hitting Iceland with repeated attacks now and the fans are absolutely loving it. The latest attempt sees the stands want a penalty, I think it was just a good bit of defending but VAR will have a look.
82 min: Gunnlaugsdottir and Tryggvadottir are on for Sigurdardottir and Johannsdottir as Iceland look to keep their campaign on track.
81 min: Iceland need to reply and they almost did with a great strike from Vilhjalmsdottir but Peng saves. Then Switzerland go up the other end and almost score as well, this time through Wandeler. End-to-end, this game is wide open.
79 min: Riesen is on for Pilgrim as Switzerland look to play this game out.
78 min: Well, if it stands like this Iceland will be out. Manager Jón Þór Hauksson just looked in the sky in frustration after they conceded after a long period of momentum resulted in nothing for them.
Switzerland win the ball high from the keeper’s distribution and some clinical passes sees Reuteler tap home.
GOAL! Switzerland 1-0 Iceland (Reuteler, 76)
There it is. 29, 658 fans in the stands tonight, the majority of whom have just gone crazy.
Updated
76 min: Jonsdottir gets all the boos as she has yet another throw in as Iceland get a grip on this match. The jeers are getting louder but it doesn’t influence her as the delivery is good again but her own eventual shot is extremely wide.
74 min: A fun fact for you, but maybe not so fun for Iceland fans, Iceland have not won a Euros game since 2013. That win came against the Netherlands. Can they make history tonight? They still have time and they have some momentum. They almost broke the deadlock there but a block came in at the last second.
72 min: Beney has been a threat for Switzerland all night, they just need to feed her more balls and she will hit the back of the net.
70 min: Halldorsdottir tries to keep the ball on but Riesen defends well to win a foul. The tempo ebbs and flows in this match, one moment there is so much happening and then another it is so slow.
68 min: Iceland make a change with Albertsdottir off for Halldorsdottir. She is immediately involved as her first shot is wide.
67 min: Vallotto takes it but the communication just isn’t there as it is easily cleared by Iceland. It looked like a play from the training pitch but it failed miserably.
66 min: The crowd want a penalty and when it does not come the boos come again. One the replay it doesn’t look enough for a penalty, Switzerland do win a free kick from it though.
64 min: Vilhjalmsdottir crosses in the corner and Brynjarsdottir gets a head to it but the attempt is wide.
63 min: Boos come again as Jonsdottir takes her time over her throw in. But the resulting throw is good and it eventually sees her win a corner.
62 min: Maritz rolls twice after a foul but she is okay, the foul sees the momentum from Iceland’s game drain slightly.
60 min: Oh my gosh what a save, she is the Serie A goalkeeper of the year for a reason. Wandeler crosses in and Beney gets a great header on target but Runarsdottir pushes it over for a corner. The set piece is dealt with – just – by Iceland.
Updated
58 min: Jonsdottir has a lovely cross into the box, it’s beautiful but Peng makes a critical intervention before an Icelandic player can get to it. This match is really livening up now.
57 min: Switzerland make two changes with Crnogorcevic and Wandeler on for Stierli and Folmli.
56 min: Beney wins Switzerland a corner and Vallotto remains the taker. Her delivery was good to Calligaris but she slips and the chance is wasted.
54 min: Jonsdottir readies her long throw again, it’s effective in it’s length but her teammates do nothing with it. It does seem as though Iceland are using some tactics to run down the clock slightly.
52 min: Kári Tulinius has got in touch and said:
When you come from a country with not so many people, you get used to seeing your national side lose. But this time around, Iceland had high hopes. The team was settled and we have a spine of world class players. But after three halves of football, we’re deservedly on the brink of elimination. While I hope the team clicks into gear, I’d settle for a scruffy, deflected strike that dribbles over the line.
This game is the perfect storm for something like that to happen, Kári. Don’t give up hope yet.
50 min: What a lovely ball put on a plate for Folmli but her effort hits the side netting. Both sides eager to break the deadlock as soon as possible.
49 min: Albertsdottir lines it up and she whallops it forward. It was a fabulous effort, it clips off of the bar and over. Oh so close.
48 min: An early free kick given to Iceland after a Maritz foul, the frosty bite of this encounter has not thawed.
46 min: Oh a false start to begin this second half. A restart has happened and we are underway. Please do keep getting in touch, let me know your thoughts: football or cake wise.
Back underway: Switzerland 0-0 Iceland
All the points up for grabs with the deadlock not broken yet. Can a goal be found? All to come.
Here’s how the other game in this group played out earlier. The Norway win means if Iceland lose tonight they are out. A draw or win keeps them in the competition. No matter the result tonight, Switzerland remain in the competition.
Half-time: Switzerland 0-0 Iceland
It had been a fairly even affair until the last five minutes of the half where Switzerland seemed to come alive. Iman Beney came closest and if they keep up that energy a goal feel inevitable. All to play for.
45 + 4 min: Switzerland win a free kick after a push on Schertenleib. Vallotto is the taker again and sends it long, it’s cleared but it comes to Beney who gets a shot away and it hits the side of the netting. Half the stadium thought it was in. A whisker away.
45 + 2 min: There will be five minutes added. Time for a decisive goal? Absolutely.
45 min: It has been a very fairly balanced match with both throwing attacking hits so far, the only thing missing is a goal. Schertenleib tries to break the deadlock now with a great run but the long range effort is over the bar.
44 min: Manchester City fans will love that sight, an excellent bit of defensive work from their new signing Beney as Jonsdottir attempted to get a shot away.
42 min: Jonsdottir, who is known for a long throw in, launches the ball into the box and Iceland direct the ball on target but Peng saves.
40 min: Here comes the noise as Switzerland peel forward once again, they look so slick in the midfield but in front of goal are rushing their passes. A little bit more patience and they could squeak ahead before the break.
38 min: This is such a tasty match, it’s quite frosty between both sides in this crucial game.
36 min: A weak cross dribbles into Runarsdottir’s hands but Switzerland are getting joy down the left through Riesen.
35 min: Boos rain down from the stands as yet another Iceland player, this time Jonsdottir, is down. She is quickly back to her feet but she wins a free kick. The delivery is good but Peng reads it clearly to collect.
34 min: Switzerland take it short and work it into the box. It comes back out but Calligaris’ chip in has too much on it. Gudny Arnadottir is now off for Heidarsdottir as that hamstring injury proves too much.
31 min: Gudny Arnadottir quickly pulled up with what looks like a hamstring injury as Switzerland win a corner. But they now go on without her.
NO GOAL! Switzerland 0-0 Iceland
No goal. Johannsdottir came back on before the set piece and gets fouled and so it is out.
VAR are having a look to see if there was a foul in the build-up here. Looks likely to be ruled out.
GOAL! Switzerland 1-0 Iceland (Viggosdottir OG, 29)
Vallotto takes the set piece and it pings around, it’s in! But they are checking it.
Updated
28 min: Beney wins a corner and this feels like a key moment to take a bit of control of this match.
28 min: Johannsdottir looks in some pain as she comes off for some treatment, it’s unclear if she will continue at the moment.
26 min: A cynical foul from Johannsdottir on Walti, who was on her way to a counterattack. The yellows are clocking up, it is exactly how Iceland received a red card in their opening game with a second yellow. Switzerland take the free kick but Iceland do very well to wrestle it back, Johannsdottir receiving treatment now.
25 min: Switzerland win a free kick and Sigurdardottir gets a yellow card to boot for a blatant shirt pull. They take it quickly but Iceland win it back then there’s another injury, this time to Vilhjalmsdottir. She is back to her feet now, so many stoppages so far in this match. Iceland win a free kick as a result but it’s cleared.
23 min: An absolute peach of a ball comes into the box for Iceland but Calligaris reads it well to clear. Play in the final thirds of both ends just not clinical enough so far to trouble either keeper.
21 min: Schertenleib is showing exactly why she has won the starting shirt this evening, she is causing Iceland all kinds of issues.
19 min: Hosts Switzerland win a free kick as Jonsdottir fouls Reuteler, it’s in a good position. The delivery from Vallotto isn’t brilliant and Runarsdottir saves easily.
17 min: Iceland are peppering the Switzerland goal but they can’t quite get it over the line. Brynjarsdottir is down after a hit to the face but she is back without need for treatment. Peter Oh says:
I’m sipping from a glass of chardonnay produced in Paso Robles, off the California coast, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
15 min: Iceland really trying to press Switzerland and it inspires their fans into a Viking Thunder Clap.
13 min: Jonsdottir is back to her feet and looking able to carry on which is very good news.
11 min: Hang on, the TV maths is correct. This is why I work with words! Iceland would be out as if they lose this evening, they would need Switzerland and Finland to lose in the last round of group matches to have a chance which is impossible as they are playing one another. There is a break in play as Jonsdottir receives some treatment, no foul given but it looked like a painful one.
Updated
9 min: “Banana bread is also not bread,” says Kendrick Curtis. “And you’ll be mad as hell when you discover what a Pontefact cake is!!” Okay, I did Google it and it has in fact blown my mind that it’s called cake but it’s a sweet. It’s just like Jaffa Cakes, they are a biscuit.
Also the commentary say if Iceland lose this game, they are out of the tournament. My maths does not link up with theirs through the various permutations but I will trust the TV for now.
6 min: Every time Switzerland get a hint of an attack the crowd are in full voice, the atmosphere is amazing in Bern. The supporters are also not letting a little rain dampen their spirits either.
Updated
4 min: Switzerland win a corner now, end-to-end stuff early on. The delivery was good but Stierli fires over. Joe Pearson has got in touch about my shortbread quandary and said:
According to our good friend Wikipedia, it is based on an old meaning of ‘short’ meaning crumbly, as opposed to ‘long’ which meant stretchy. Also, you might note that shortbread and shortcake are supposedly interchangeable in the UK, whereas they are completely different things in the US. That’s all I got.
Yes, maybe the interchangeability has something to do with it. The bread use is just so confusing, it’s definitely a biscuit.
2 min: Oh my word Iceland rattle the bar already, wow. A one touch attempt by Sigurdardottir hits the crossbar.
Kick-off: Switzerland 0-0 Iceland
Here we go then, who will get their points tally ticking? All to come.
There will now have a moment of silence for Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both recently sadly passed away in a car accident.
Here are the anthems, just a few moments to go before kick-off.
Here’s how the other game in the group played out earlier today:
Ramona Bachmann is a Switzerland legend but was ruled out of the tournament with an ACL injury. However, she is still present with the team and has been seen on the pitch tonight supporting her teammates.
I’d love to hear from you, you can email me with your thoughts on the game and the tournament more generally but also I do like a bit of snack chat. For this game more specifically, I wondered why shortbread is called bread when it is a biscuit? Let me know if you know.
The crowds in Bern are already up for this, thousands are expected to cheer on their side tonight as they search for their first win of the tournament.
The Guardian have written one for every team in the tournament, and so here is Switzerland’s:
Want to know more about Iceland? Well you are in luck, here is our team guide for you:
Norway extended their perfect start to the Euros with a 2-1 win over Finland earlier today. They did need some late Caroline Graham Hansen magic to do so but they pull off another narrow win. This means Norway will be top of the group heading into the last round of group matches no matter what the result between Switzerland and Finland as Norway now have six points.
