Visiting Swiss President Alain Berset has said his country is willing to play a key role in diplomatic talks involving North Korea.

"We are ready to organize the meetings, we are ready to ensure that the dialogue exists really between the North and South Korea and with other actors," Berset said at a press conference after his meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Thursday. "It was a very important point in the discussion with Prime Minister Abe today."

During the Pyeongchang Olympics, Berset met South Korean President Moon Jae In and North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam. "The message is always the same: Switzerland has a long history also of helping on the Korean Peninsula to ensure that there is peace," he added.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that summit talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would take place in May or early June. When asked if Switzerland was one of the options as a venue to host the meeting, Berset said, "It could be." But he also said that "we will see what happens now."
