Swindon Town's move for Bristol Rovers winger Kyle Bennett stalls

Swindon Town's move for Kyle Bennett has stalled over a lack of transfer funds.

The Bristol Rovers winger is wanted by the League Two club following a promising loan stint at the County Ground last season.

Bennett, 28, netted four goals in 15 league matches for the Robins in the second half of last season, but returned to the Gas this summer.

Swindon boss Richie Wellens had talked up launching a bid for Bennett at the end of last season but said that the club would delay doing so in order to avoid paying the player's wages over the summer.

Instead, they made a bid for Bennett at the end of July, but it appears to have been rejected, with the winger featuring in all four of the Gas' games so far this season.

Wellens has not ruled out making another offer but says the ball is now partly in Rovers' court.

“Kyle Bennett, let’s see where that one goes,” said Wellens to the Gazette & Herald.

“There’s not much money in the coffers at this minute.

“If Bristol Rovers do or don’t want to keep him, we’ll see how things develop in the next couple of weeks.”

From Rovers' perspective, it appears to be a catch 22 as to what to whether they allow Bennett to leave.

The winger is a big earner at Rovers, so allowing him to leave would free up more money to bring players in, but, at the same time, they are already short on wide attackers with pace.
