Swindon Town preparing bid for Bristol Rovers attacker Kyle Bennett

Swindon Town are set to launch a bid this week to land Bristol Rovers midfielder Kyle Bennett.

Robins manager Richie Wellens has told the Swindon Advertiser he plans to table a bid for the skillful winger who impressed on loan at the League Two club last season.

Bennett, 28, made 15 appearances for Swindon in the second half of last season after heading out on loan on transfer deadline day in January.

Wellens said: “I’m hoping to make an offer this week, but we still have players at the club that will not be involved this season and are taking up a sizable chunk of the wage bill.

“Unless I can get them out, it’s difficult to bring players in on a decent wage.”

Bennett has been a regular for the Gas in pre-season as manager Graham Coughlan has used him in a number of positions, including in a more central number nine role, or at the top of a midfield diamond.

During his time at Swindon former Portsmouth player Bennett scored four goals and was one of the club's standout players.

Earlier in the summer Wellens talked of his admiration for Bennett but reiterated it was financial issues which meant he hadn't already bid for the player.
