Swindon Town and two more of Bristol Rovers' League Two rivals hit with transfer embargo

Swindon Town, Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe United have been placed under transfer embargoes, the EFL confirmed on Wednesday night.

While all were glued to the build-up for England vs Denmark, the EFL released news Bristol Rovers' League Two rivals had been placed under restrictions in the transfer market.

Swindon's rap sheet is a long one, with the Robins in real strife amid chaos off the field.

The club is wrapped up in an ownership dispute which the EFL labelled "concerning" earlier in the week.

The affairs at the County Ground saw manager John McGreal and his assistant Rene Gilmartin resign without taking charge of a game.

Swindon have been punished for failing to provide and publish their annual accounts, defaulting on payments to HMRC, non-payment to football creditors and failure to submit Salary Cap Management Protocol calculations.

Scunthorpe and Oldham have been hit with embargoes due to "conditions under monitored loan agreement".

Swindon have only seven players on their books and all sides under the embargo are permitted to sign enough players to fill a 23-man squad.

But they are forbidden from paying transfer or loan fees. Instead, they can only bring in free agents on one-year deals or half-season loans.

Championship sides Derby County, Reading and Hull City have also been placed under embargoes, as have Fleetwood Town and Gillingham in League One.

League One Sheffield Wednesday have had their transfer embargo lifted.
