Swimming club helps School Bank

Members of a West Lothian swimming club have been doing their part for the community by donating to an organisation that helps provide children with all they need for school.

Swim-IT collected a number of items that were donated to The School Bank West Lothian, who say they have seen an increased demand for their service across the county this winter.

The School Bank West Lothian’s project manager, Collette Moran, thanked the club for their generous donations.

She said: “This winter we have seen a huge increase in demand for our service across West Lothian.

“In November, we saw the number of referrals triple meaning we helped provide a pack to just under 300 children in that month alone.

“Our packs are all unique, just like the children we support.

“But most of them included a cosy winter jacket, hat or gloves, and winter footwear.

“We receive referrals throughout the year from professionals in the community such as head teachers, Women’s Aid and other organisations who are in the position to identify the need. Self-referrals can also be made through the West Lothian Council’s Advice Shop.”

She added the group is grateful for the support they receive in West Lothian.

Collette said: “During October right through to end of January, we run our Winter Warmer Appeal and this year so far almost 400 members of the public have signed up to provide a pack which includes a warm jacket amongst other things.

“We really depend on the kindness of the public, both individuals and corporate organisations to support us, without which we could not help all the children in West Lothian who need our service.

“We would like to thank Swim-IT and their members for supporting us.

“Their amazing donations will be passed to children here in West Lothian, helping them to feel valued by their community and able to participate fully at school - just like their peers.”

Swim-IT head coach, Fiona Donald, explained why they decided to support the charity.

She said: “The School Bank West Lothian was mentioned by one of our members as an organisation collecting donations for local school children and a recent partnership with women’s aid.

“We decided that this is an organisation we would like to support as we believe in their values and passion for supporting the local community.

“What they do, what they stand for and who they support and how they do it is inspiring.”

She added: “We wanted to support this cause especially now after a really tough two years for many through the pandemic and wanted to help give back.

“With the support of many of our members we were able to collect so many amazing donations for the School Bank that is going to provide for so many families.

“We would like to thank all our incredible members for donating and a huge thank you to School Bank West Lothian for all they do in the local community.”
