Swimming ban imposed at Bundoran beach in Donegal due to dangerous levels of E. coli in the water

A swimming ban has been imposed at a beach in Co Donegal due to dangerous levels of bacteria in the water.

Donegal County Council issued a ban after high levels of E.coli were discovered in samples from the water at Bundoran beach.

The ban is expected to last three days, however, it may be lifted sooner following further sampling.

A tweet issued by the council last night read: "Bathers are temporarily advised not to swim at Bundoran bathing waters due to recent heavy rainfall.

"The temporary prohibition notice is expected to last 72 hours. The situation is being monitored, we will keep you informed with updates."

It's believed an overflow of storm water caused by recent heavy rains caused the outbreak of the bacteria at the popular beach.

The ban comes ahead of a warm weekend with Met Eireann forecasting highs of 24C.

A council spokesperson said the situation is being monitored and further sampling will be carried out.

Locals are hoping that the all-clear will be given after re-sampling is carried out today, allowing bathers to make the most of the weekend.
