Swimming ban at various Dublin beaches lifted following water quality tests but some still remain

Swimming bans at several south Dublin beaches have been lifted following results of water quality tests.

Various beaches were issued with prohibition notices on Friday after wastewater was found to have overflowed at the city's treatment plant in Ringsend.

It was the fourth time in 2019 that the bans had been put in place which saw around ten beaches all over the capital affected.

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council confirmed on Tuesday that test results had came back and the all-clear was given to lift the ban.

This means that the notices issued for Seapoint, Sandycove, White Rock and Killiney bathing areas are no longer in place.

They said in a statement: "“Further to receipt of test results from bathing water samples taken on August 10th, the temporary bathing prohibition in place at all remaining locations – Seapoint, Sandycove, White Rock and Killiney bathing areas – has now been lifted.

“Please note that although the prohibition for Sandycove has been lifted, results were slightly elevated and require further monitoring and sampling today/tomorrow in accordance with HSE recommendations.

“However, based on a risk assessment carried out by the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown bathing water team, the predicted risk of current elevated bacteria levels at Sandycove is low."

While the swimming ban at the Forty Foot was also lifted, there is still a ban in place at Dollymount Beach as Dublin City Council wait for tests results.
