Dublin City Council has placed a Bathing Water Notice at a number of Dublin beaches following a stormwater overflow at the wastewater treatment plant in Ringsend.
It comes after poor weather conditions following the yellow national warning which saw major downpours of thundery rain which led to spot flooding in some areas in Dublin.
Because of this, Dublin City Council in consultation with the Health Service Executive have put a bathing prohibition notice in place at beaches in Dollymount, Portmarnock, Seapoint, Sandycove and Forty Foot as of today.
This advice will remain in place pending testing of the bathing water, which will be carried out by Dublin City Council.
Apart from this notice, bathing prohibitions are already in place for the entire 2019 bathing season at Sandymount and Merrion beaches due to issues with the general quality of the water, which are unrelated to the Ringsend Plant.
No further prohibitions are being put in place at these locations.
A spokesman for Irish Water said that they "regret the impact this may have on beach users".
Elsewhere, there are swimming restrictions at Portmarnock beach due to what beaches.ie describes as a "risk of deterioration in water quality due to expected heavy rainfall".
They add that the expect duration of the restrictions are 72 hours.
It comes as An Bord Pleanala's decision on whether to allow the creation of a monster sewage plant in Clonsaugh draws closer, with a decision due this week.
If allowed, the sewage treamnet plant will push two million litres of secondary treated sewage into the sea off Portmarnock Beach, Europe's only UNESCO protected biosphere.
Earlier in the month, EIGHT beaches along the Dublin coast were slapped with no-swim notices following a sewage overflow at the Ringsend plant.
However, these were lifted later.
