Swimmers to be banned from Merrion Strand after South Dublin beach fails FIFTH water quality test in a row

Merrion Strand will the the first beach in Ireland to shut down swimming after failing a FIFTH water quality test in a row.

The latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency revealed the South Dublin sun spot will have swimming banned after another failed examination.

The ban will take effect from June 1, with signs to be posted along the beach warning revellers not to go for a splash.

The full report revealed that:

– 95 per cent of bathing waters (140 of 147) met or exceeded the minimum required standard, up from 94 per cent in 2018;

– 107 (73 per cent) were classified as “excellent”, up from 103;

– 24 (16 per cent) were classified as “good”, up from 22;

– Nine (6 per cent) were classified as “sufficient”, down from 12.

- Five beaches were rated "poor", including Merrion Strand and Portrane (the Brook) Beach in Dublin.

- Three bathing waters, all in Dublin, were classified for the first time. They were: The Forty Foot Bathing Place (classified as ‘excellent’), White Rock Beach (classified as ‘excellent’), and Sandycove Beach (classified as ‘good’).
