Swimmers and dog walkers warned as more dangerous algae spotted in Edinburgh reservoir

Pet owners and swimmers who use the Pentland Hills park have been warned after more potentially deadly algae was spotted in a reservoir.

Last month we told how the toxic blue-green algae was seen at Threipmuir reservoir.

The algae can bloom suddenly and contains bacteria can can cause illness or death to animals and humans in high amounts.

Blue-green algae has now been spotted at the neighbouring Harlaw reservoir near Balerno.

Pentland Hills Regional Park warned the public of the new bloom on Monday.

They said: "Blue green algae has been reported as blooming in Harlaw reservoir. At the moment from observation it appears to be worst on the north east shore.

"Please note the bloom can be harmful to humans and pets. Please check the water before entering and avoid contact with the bloom."

Dogs are particularly at risk as they can lick their fur after swimming, absorbing the toxins into their body.

Potential symptoms in dogs following exposure to blue-green algae toxins can include:

  • lethargy
  • difficulty breathing
  • excessive salivation
  • lack of coordination
  • vomiting
  • urination
  • diarrhea
  • convulsions

If your dog displays any of these symptoms, you should take them to the vet immediately.

You can also download an app called Bloomin' Algae that allows you to report instances of blue-green algae to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, which in turn helps them to track and monitor the risk to animals and the public.
