Swimmers allowed to swim at popular beauty spot again after e.coli tests

Clevedon’s Marine Lake is now safe for people to swim – following fresh tests on the water.

People were being advised not to swim in the seafront lake earlier this month after tests showed e.coli and coliform and enterococci bacteria in the water.

Red flags were put up at both entrances to the attraction advising people not to swim.

It was thought the lake would be out of action for weeks, due to the timings of overtopping tides needed to refresh the water.

Tests of the water were carried out again earlier this week, with the results now showing the water quality as ‘excellent.’

The red no swimming warning flags were taken down today (Thursday, June 25).

The news has been welcomed by residents and visitors who have flocked to Clevedon to cool off in the lake, which is managed by the Marine Lake Enthusiasts Society (Marlens).

It is believed the hot weather may have helped improve the water quality due to the fact that UV light kills bacteria.

The calm weather may also have led to silt being able to settle at the bottom of the lake.

Marlens chairman Joe Norman said: “Bacteria levels do go up and down all the time.

“We tested the water again on June 23 and the results have come back to show it is excellent and now safe to swim in.

"This is good news, especially in this weather."

The poor water quality earlier this month is believed to be linked to issues with sewerage overflow into the Bristol Channel which refills the lake.
