Swimmer tries taking a dip in choppy sea during Storm Brendan

A swimmer in Ireland was determined to carry on with his daily dip in the sea - despite Storm Brendan being at its peak.

Tommy Roddy was out walking in County Galway when he spotted the near-naked scrappy swimmer lowering himself down a ladder into what looked like incredibly choppy waters.

Tommy managed to capture the moment and told the Irish Mirror: “I would know the man to see him, he's in his 60s and you would see him swimming every day.

“I was a bit surprised to see him go in, given the rough conditions, but he is swimming there every day and was only in the water for about five minutes.

“I went out for a walk along the promenade myself because I thought the wind and rain had died down a bit but I could hardly walk up the prom once I got out.

“I was just there watching the waves, then I spotted the man getting into the water.

“Then suddenly as he was getting out and I was recording, a big wave came over him and I got drowned myself.

“The man is fine, he only went in for a dip. Not too long after he got out, another man got in and stayed in for a bit. They both were only in the water for around five minutes."

Met Eireann had warned that Storm Brendan may pose a "threat to life and property" to Ireland. Status Orange warnings were issued, with the public also advised to avoid coastal areas during the storm.
