On arriving at the scene the lifeboat was directed to the casualty by HM Coastguard Crosby from the beach and the volunteer lifeboat crew were able to locate, stabilise and rescue them from the water.

Mark Dyer, deputy launching authority, New Brighton Lifeboat said;: "The casualty was very lucky that people on the beach were able to raise the alarm.

"It appeared that the casualty had been in the water for some time and were suffering from cold water shock.

"We urge people using the water to stay within your limits, If you do get in trouble in the water, float to live. Lean back, extend your arms and legs and float until you've got your breathing under control."
