Swimmer dies after shark attack off the coast of Hawaii

A man has been killed in a suspected shark attack off the coast of Hawaii.

The 65-year-old Californian man had been swimming 55 metres off the beach on the Kaanapali Shores area in western Maui when he was attacked.

Local media said a witness in a neighbouring hotel raised the alarm and a jet ski and helicopter was sent out to find the man.

The rescuers performed CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His injuries were consistent with a shark attack, KHON2 News said.

The incident marks the sixth shark attack case this year in Hawaii and the first to result in a fatality since 2015.

Only five fatal shark attacks have been recorded since 1995 in Hawaii.

Shark expert Michael Domier told KHON2 News: “Your chances of getting attacked by a shark and even surviving is less than one in 12 million.”

In 2015, snorkeler Margaret Cruse was attacked and killed by a shark off Maui after becoming separated from friends.
