Three swimmers missing in London after going into Thames in heatwave

Three men are missing after entering the River Thames in London during the heatwave last night.

A 22-year-old went missing in East London's Shadwell Basin at 6.05pm while swimming with his friends.

Another two men later disappeared in separate instances - one at Waterloo Bridge at 8.30pm and the other near Kingston High Street at 8.35pm.

Of the incident at Shadwell Basin, police said: "The man, believed to be aged 22 years, was swimming with friends and has not resurfaced.

"Officers and the marine policing unit attended along with other emergency service personnel and are searching the area."

It comes as parts of the UK are in the midst of a heatwave, with temperatures across England exceeding 30C (86F) on Tuesday.

A body was pulled from a lake at the Cotswold Water Park, Gloucestershire, earlier this evening after a swimmer went missing.

The alarm was raised at 1.40pm and he was pronounced dead after being recovered from the water at around 8.50pm, the BBC reports.

Swimmers took to the water to cool off from the 32C heat gripping parts of the country today.

A 29-year-old man drowned in Shadwell Basin back in 2016 after jumping into the water with 100 other people.
