LUCKNOW: Effectively pursuing the cases of crime against women and children, the prosecution department of the Uttar Pradesh police got five criminals sentenced to death between January 1 and March 31 this year.
In the last 18 months, police have got 35 convicted to death sentences in cases of crime against women.
“Since January this year, 192 people have been given life imprisonment while 265 others were given 10-year sentence,” said additional director general (ADG), law and order, Prashant Kumar.
He said that overall 11,212 people were convicted in cases related to crime against women. The officer said since 2019, the state was at number one spot in conviction of accused in cases of crime against women. The ADG said that 25 mafias had been identified against whom extensive action would be initiated. Recently, a criminal, Dhruv Kumar alias Kuntu Singh, was convicted for 10 years in a case under the Gangster’s Act.
ADG, prosecution, Ashutosh Pandey said the rate of conviction had been achieved due to digitisation of entries before the court, which include post-mortem, forensic and DNA reports. “It helps in securing conviction on the e-prosecution portal,” he added. UP tops with 77 lakh entries followed by Madhya Pradesh (20 lakh) and Gujarat (4.4 lakh entries) on the e-prosecution portal.
UP DGP Mukul Goel said, “We have embarked on a futuristic strategy to evolve a better synergy between police, prison and prosecution through maximum use of technology.”
