SWG3 submit plans for new graffiti and street art hub Yardworks Studio

A graffiti and street art hub could open at SWG3 after plans were submitted to the council.

The arts and events company has asked for permission to develop the ‘Yardworks Studio’ – building on “the success of the annual Yardworks Festival”.

Refurbished shipping containers and a two-storey main building would make up the Eastvale Place hub.

“Yardworks Studio seeks to be more than just a home for graffiti art,” the plans state.

It aspires “to be an inclusive community facility where people of all ages and abilities can participate in a wide range of street art and group endeavours”.

Permanent facilities for local streets artists would “bring the community together, enhance learning, address disadvantage and ensure social, environment and economic development”, the application adds.

Over 125 people participated in the inaugural Yardworks Festival, and SWG3 believes the success “demonstrates the draw and demand for public works of this nature”.

There would be a reception, a retail space selling art supplies, a graffiti studio which could host workshops and display art and artist studios.

The plans also include a writers’ bench, which would be a communal room with educational space, and a production suite, available for hire.

Cycle parking and 67 car parking spaces are also proposed.

The hub would be “Scotland’s first purpose-designed facility that uses street arts to support social change”, the proposal adds.

Yardworks provides legal walls for artists to display their work, which diverts “them away from practicing street art and graffiti in unsafe and illegal environments”.
