CINCINNATI _ The Cubs looked like they were one their way to Los Angeles with a much-needed win Sunday before the roof collapsed.
A 6-1 lead in the seventh inning evaporated when Mike Montgomery and Pedro Strop gave up seven runs in an 8-6 Reds win.
The Reds swept the Cubs in a four-game series for the first time since 1983.
Montgomery was pressed into duty as the emergency starter when Tyler Chatwood's wife went into labor early in the morning. He allowed only one run on three hits over the first six innings, but was yanked after three straight hits to start the seventh. Strop immediately served up a three-run home run to pinch-hitter Jesse Winker, whose grand slam on Thursday vaulted the Reds to a win in the opener.
Tucker Barnhart's RBI single tied it, and Joey Votto's RBI double gave the Reds a 7-6 lead. Strop walked in a run before finally getting yanked, and was booed off the mound by road-tripping Cubs fans.
Kris Bryant sat again with left shoulder soreness.
Bryant is resting as a precaution for soreness he incurred five days ago in his left shoulder. He said it's not too serious.
"It's OK," Bryant said. "I think it's just the result of swinging too much. It's a pretty normal occurrence ... I think (it started) five days ago. I've been in the cage swinging, maybe more than I usually do."
Bryant said he's had shoulder soreness in the past and thought he could swing through it.
"I was probably being a little stubborn," he said. "I feel like there's a negative to going in the trainer's room and telling them you're hurt, but sometimes that's what you've got to do."
Manager Joe Maddon said "there's no sense pushing that right now," and the 10-day disabled list is not an option for now.
"He's pretty resilient," he said.
Meanwhile, the Cubs optioned Luke Farrell to Triple-A Iowa and placed Rob Zastryzny (back) on the 10-day disabled list. In corresponding moves, the Cubs called up Justin Hancock and Cory Mazzoni.
