Sweltering Sunday in store for Scotland as weekend weather tipped to hit 27C

Heat seeping up from the sweltering south will turn Scotland tropical on Sunday, with temperatures set to hit around 80F (27C) in places.

Parts of London and the south east burst through the 30C (86F) mark on Saturday thanks to south westerly winds blowing hot air up from France and Spain.

Scotland is unlikely to record such blistering temperatures but the Met Office say a high of 28C (82F) is possible north of the Border on Sunday.

Forecaster Craig Snell said: "Compared to what August has delivered so far, this weekend will come as a welcome relief from the rain.

“Things were quite nice in Scotland on Saturday, with the best of the temperatures reserved for the east of the country.

“Charterhall in Berwickshire managed 25C (77F) by mid-afternoon and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh were not far behind at 24.4C (75F).

“Even places in the west fared well, with a reading of 23C (73F) at Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire.”

The conclusion of Glasgow’s Summer Sessions will prove a much sunnier and drier affair on Sunday evening compared to last weekend when Bellahouston Park was turned into a quagmire by heavy rain.

Glasgow can expect a temperature of 75F (24C) ready for headliners The 1975 to take to the stage on Sunday evening.

Fair conditions are expected to continue into next week, setting the scene for a spectacular firework conclusion to the Edinburgh Festival on Monday night.
