IMABARI, Ehime -- The top-prize artwork for a contest to showcase the city's dyeing technology is on display in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. The city is known for its flourishing towel industry,

The Imabari Color Show has been held by the prefectural textile dyeing industry association since 2017. This year's contest was held under the theme of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, and was open to the public. Dyed yarns to be discarded as waste, among other materials, were transformed into art for the contest.

The grand prize went to work by an art club of the prefectural government-run Imabari Higashi junior high and high school. About 500 colorful spheres, each about 15 centimeters to 30 centimeters in diameter, were hung from the ceiling. They were made by wrapping threads around balloons, then hardening them. The spheres made with green and white threads look like muskmelon.

It is on display at the Shimanami Earth Land in the city from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Sept. 23.

Admission is free.
