Young ayu sweetfish have begun swimming upstream in the Neo River in Motosu, Gifu Prefecture. Some young sweetfish, which are usually 5 to 10 centimeters long, can be seen jumping in the water along dikes in the downstream area as they make their way upriver.
According to the Neo River Course Fisheries Cooperative Associations, the start of sweetfish swimming upstream is later than usual and the number is still small. However, the vice president of the association Tsugio Ozaki believes it will not remain that way for long. "The number will increase," Ozaki said.
The sweetfish journeying upstream is expected to continue until the middle of June. The ayu season in the downstream area will officially open on May 11.
