Sweeper held in Hyderabad for stealing Rs 33 lakh cash at sub-post office

HYDERABAD: A sweeper was arrested on Sunday by the Cyberabad police in connection with the ₹33 lakh cash which went missing from a BHEL sub-post office a few days ago. Before committing the offence, the accused watched You Tube videos, police said.

Cyberabad police said that on February 13, Chauhan Shankar a sub-post master of BHEL Post Office, lodged a complaint claiming that someone broke into the post office set it on fire, and stole the cash kept in their chest using gas cutters. The accused had broken the grills of the post office to enter.

“On February 12, postal officers of few other branches came to BHEL branch sub post office and took some cash. After completion of their working hours, they returned to the post office and deposited the remaining amount. On the same day at 5pm, the complainant said the total amount at the branch was ₹34 lakh. It was locked in the chest box,” police said.

At 12.45am the next day, the watchman of BHEL branch post office called the complainant and informed him that there had been a fire mishap at the branch. When he rushed to the spot, he found that fire department officials had doused the fire, but someone had illegally gained entry and opened the chest gas cutters. Except ₹1 lakh, the remaining cash was missing. The accused allegedly set the post office ablaze, before fleeing from the place for screening the evidence.

Police said that during the questioning of various staff members of the sub-post office, they found sweeper Zaheer’s answers were inconsistent. When he was interrogated further, he alleged admitted committing the offence and from him police seized ₹28 lakh cash.

He allgedly committed the crime to bail himself out from a financial crisis.
