
Monks and temple workers sweep away dust from under the eaves of the Great Main Hall of Naritasan Shinshoji temple at an annual year-end cleaning event in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, early Friday. A senior temple official lit a sacred goma fire before 5 a.m. and announced the start of the ritual to remove dust accumulated during the year. About 40 monks and workers then set about cleaning with poles of bamboo measuring about 10 meters long with their leaves still attached. The temple expects about 3 million visitors in the first three days of the New Year.
