Swedish royal family turns out in tiaras for Nobel Prize ceremony banquet in Stockholm

On Tuesday night the Swedish royal family turned out in their best white tie for the Nobel Prize Award ceremony banquet.

The banquet, which took place at Stockholm City Hall, was attended by King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, as well as Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Sofia.

Female members of the family wore tiaras for the occasion. Princess Sofia, who accompanied Swiss astronomer Didier Queloz, picked an off-the-shoulder teal blue gown with buttoned sleeves and a white clutch bag.

The Nobel Banquet takes place each year in the Blue Hall of Stockholm City Hall after the Nobel Prize Ceremony. The dinner is traditionally followed by a dance in the Golden Hall.

The Swedish royal family has undergone a number of changes this year. In October, King Carl Gustaf announced plans to strip five of his grandchildren of royal status in a bid to modernise and slim down the Swedish royal family. The move was welcomed by his children, who expressed a wish for their own children to lead lives as 'individuals' rather than members of the royal family.

Princess Madeleine - King Gustaf’s youngest daughter - wrote in a statement published to Instagram, “Chris and I think it is good that our children now have a greater opportunity to shape their own lives as individuals in the future.”
