Swedish FA release statement that could impact Leeds United's chances of a Premier League return

English football has been provided fresh hope in regards to resuming the 2019/20 season.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, all professional football in the country was suspended indefinitely at the beginning of the month and there are tentative plans to get back up and running in June.

Of course, everything depends on whether it will be safe to do so.

Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

But perhaps England can take comfort from what Sweden are doing.

Unlike the rest of the world, Sweden has taken a different approach when it comes to dealing with the coronavirus as they have allowed schools, restaurants and shops to stay open.

And it would appear that strategy will ensure that the new Swedish football season which was due to start at the beginning of April will go ahead within the next couple of months.

It has been revealed that June 14 is a starting date for the top two divisions in the country.

"Ever since the leagues were postponed the aim has been to play the first games at the start of June. Now we can say that the date we are working towards is 14 June," a statement reads.

"The ambition is still to play all the games with fans at the stadiums but Swedish elite football are following the coronavirus developments all the time in society as a whole and possible new directives from the authorities."

As mentioned above, if Sweden is the first European country to return to football then it provides hope to clubs in England.

In particular Leeds United.

With just nine games of the regular season remaining, the Whites are within touching distance of a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has prompted theories that the season could be declared null and void which means Leeds would be denied playing in the top-flight of English football next term.

But with Sweden looking to resume in June, that could be fantastic news for Leeds and their quest to seal a return to the Premier League.
