Sweden Joins NATO, Historic Moment At Headquarters

NATO Defence Ministers' meeting at the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels

A historic moment unfolded this morning as Sweden's flag was raised at NATO headquarters for the first time, marking Sweden as the 32nd country to join the NATO alliance. The ceremony, held earlier today, was a significant milestone for both Sweden and the alliance as a whole. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that Sweden's inclusion strengthens NATO, enhances Sweden's security, and bolsters the overall security of the alliance.

Stoltenberg highlighted that Sweden's membership ensures its coverage under NATO's collective defense clause, Article 5, which states that an attack on one ally is considered an attack on all members. Sweden's commitment to defense, with over 2% of GDP allocated to military spending, brings advanced capabilities and well-equipped forces to NATO.

Moreover, Stoltenberg emphasized that Sweden's accession sends a clear message to Russian President Putin that NATO's door remains open, with membership decisions resting solely with NATO allies. The move counters Putin's efforts to weaken NATO, as more nations joining the alliance demonstrate its growing strength.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Stoltenberg reiterated NATO's stance of not engaging in the conflict directly but providing military support to Ukraine. While combat troops on the ground in Ukraine are not planned, NATO allies are united in offering assistance to Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

Stoltenberg acknowledged the production disparity in artillery munitions between Russia and NATO countries, emphasizing the need to ramp up production to address the shortfall. NATO allies are working to increase production capacity to support Ukraine effectively.

Addressing concerns about the US political debate on NATO, Stoltenberg expressed confidence in continued US support for the alliance post-elections. He noted bipartisan backing for NATO in the US Congress and highlighted the increased defense spending by European allies and Canada, aligning with NATO guidelines.

In conclusion, Stoltenberg emphasized the mutual benefits of a strong NATO, underscoring its role in enhancing global security and stability. The addition of Sweden to the alliance signifies a momentous occasion, further solidifying NATO's commitment to collective defense and cooperation.
